The PornHub Case

The biggest topic at the end of last year was that Mastercard and Visa decided to prohibit the use of their cards on the adult website Pornhub, after a journalist at the New York Times, Nicholas Kristof reported that the platform included videos of child rape and abuse.

More than seven million videos are posted on Pornhub each year, and though the majority of them show consensual acts, some do not Mr. Kristof wrote. He reported that videos of teenage girls who had been victims of crime has been found at the website.

Mastercard said it would continue to investigate potential illegal content on other websites.
Visa also stated: “We are aware of the allegations, and we are actively engaging with the relevant financial institutions to investigate, in addition to engaging directly with the site’s parent company, MindGeek,”.
Visa added that if Pornhub is violating the law or bank policies, then the website will be further prohibited from accepting Visa payments.

Meanwhile, Mastercard promised “immediate action″ if the allegations are further substantiated.
American Express by default does not accept digital adult content websites through their payment system.

Pornhub, which said shortly after Mastercard and Visa started their investigations, that it had made changes to prevent the use of non-consensual content, and voiced that Mastercard’s and Visa’s measures were “exceptionally disappointing.”
